Join us for a comprehensive 3-week course, “The Business of Art,” designed for teens and adults who are ready to transition from creating art as a hobby to establishing it as a business.

This series will meet on November 2, 9, and 16 from 2:00-3:00, offering practical guidance on essential business skills that can set the foundation for a successful artistic career.

Class Schedule and Topics
Week 1: Navigating the Business of Art: Pricing, Promotion, and Branding (November 2)

Dive into the fundamentals of setting appropriate prices for your artwork by considering costs, time investment, and market trends.
Learn how to effectively promote your art using social media, online platforms, and community connections to reach a broader audience.
Explore the importance of personal branding, and start crafting a consistent, professional image that reflects your artistic identity.

Week 2: Legal and Financial Foundations: From Copyright to Taxes (November 9)

Gain insights into the legal aspects of the art world, including understanding copyrights, contracts, and protecting your creative work.
Get an introduction to managing the financial side of your art business, such as tracking income and expenses, basic bookkeeping, and understanding art-related taxes.
Discuss various avenues for selling your art, including commissions, galleries, art fairs, and online platforms.

Week 3: Crafting Your Artist Statement and Elevator Pitch (November 16)

Develop the skills to confidently talk about your art and connect with potential buyers, galleries, or collaborators.
Work on writing a compelling artist statement that captures your creative vision and can be used in portfolios, applications, and promotional materials.
Practice delivering an engaging elevator pitch that succinctly communicates your artistic journey and what makes your work unique, preparing you for networking opportunities and art show environments.
Class Finale: Artist Talks
The series will culminate with an opportunity for each participant to present an Artist Talk, where they can showcase their artwork and share their journey toward professionalizing their art practice. This event will provide a supportive space to practice speaking about your art, build confidence, and receive feedback from peers, creating a meaningful closure to the course.

Participants should bring existing artwork to each class session. The focus will be on developing the business skills necessary to thrive as an artist, rather than creating new art pieces during the class time. This series is dedicated to equipping artists with the tools they need to successfully transition into the art business world.
